Dr James M. Clinton received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. The prestigeous Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston offered Dr Clinton a internship in small animal medicine and surgery, which he accepted and completed prior to undertaking a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Clinton opened the Animal Eye Clinic in New Jersey in 1971, which was one of the first independant ophthalmology referral services in the East. Dr Clinton has been a Diplomate of the ACVO since 1972.
